"A Pearl Jam fans?" I asked.
"Yes. How do you know?"
"Your ringtone, obviously. That kinda my favourite song too," I laughed.
"And I take it you're a fan too?" he asked.
"Yes, yes, I am.." and he grinned so broadly.
"I knew it," he said, triumphantly.
"Knew what?"
"Knew that you're the kind of girl who likes this kind of music. rock, grunge.."
And so I was laughing. It's kinda funny that my taste of music is so obvious but people are always wrong about me being a nonsmoker. There's something about me that qualified me as a smoker, they said, but I swear I don't smoke. Never did, never going to.
And so that 3 days trip become a journey back for me. Back to the days I listened to Eddie Vedder's voice all day..
My fellow journo, turned out to be a much bigger PJ's fans than me. He knew almost everything about Pearl Jam, including that Ed was divorced from Beth, his wife for so long. I enjoyed listening to him telling things like what is it like when our local bands play 'Pearl Jam on stage', that's when they only play PJ's songs.
"And the crowd would be very excited eventhough it's not the real deal," he said. And he promised to take me to one of the events.
From him I also learned that the Pearl Jam Indonesia community has asked one of the biggest music promotor in the country to please bring PJ to Indonesia. But with no success. "But they're not giving up. I heard they have approach another promotor and he promised to bring Pearl Jam here somewhere next year".
Wow, I said. This is something I must see. And he laughed, "Of course you are," he said. And there we were keep on talking whether Eddie Vedder will take his legendary band to Jakarta. I mean, Incubus were here, Smashing Pumpkins also scheduled to perform and lots of those new bands also are already here, so why won't they. Given their big name, I can understand the difficulties, but I'm very sure those concerts is going to be a sold out. I've checked the fans website and they have many, many followers. So it's safe to say, Pearl Jam will be loved here.
For me, personally, I like Ed's voice. That deep, masculine voice. I used to listen to him in order to be sleeping at nights. And it work all the time. Like a charm.
And so, my fellow journo has successfully make me searched for my PJ's albums. And I can't stop listening to them now. I guess, I'm still a big fan afterall..:)
