I know that well, God need no defending. But still, I found myself defending Him on twitter. Haha.. a cheesy way to do it, you'll say, but somehow I found it important. For me, at the very least.
I've been a Moslem for all my life, or as far as I can think of. But maybe never as tonight, I realized, I might be more religious as I thought. I can no longer keep my silence when it comes to defending my religion, so twitter it is. I just have to comment.
My first objective was to give some insider's perspective to my colleague, which is a devout Christian, about why are we not "friendly" to the Ahmadi community. But it turned out, I have to teach him a lesson or two about why we chose this religion we're practising and about tolerance. For me, tolerance is not always from the majority to the minority, but it should be working both ways. But apparently, being minority somehow convinced them that they must be right and the whole world will help defending them. I guess they succedeed in some points. This colleague of mine, who doesn't even understand what Islam is, and why it's here, why Mohammad the prophet was here, is persistently defending the community. I can't blame him, maybe he has a too harmonious religion that he got nothing to worry about and give him some free time to try to fix things in other's religion. Of course, I was just being cynical there.
And this was what I told him, in religion, some rules are to follow, some others are to be freely interpreted. You have your holy book, your prophet, to be your guidance. But some lines are not supposed to be crossed. This, I believe, existed in almost every religion. So why are the NU and Muhammadiyah, the two biggest Islamic community in Indonesia, can live side by side without any significant conflict, but with the Ahmadi, the conflict was always so harsh and bloody? Doesn't it make you wonder, what's wrong?
Besides, as I remember vividly, it has been said in the Surah Al Kafirun (The Disbelievers), "To you be your religion, and to me my religion". So it should be alright if the community decided to follow suggestions addressed to them by many parties, to proclaimed their religion as something else, since they're "different and derailed" anyway. But they refused the idea, and the result was not anything we has hoped for, but the damage has been done.
I must say, I understand why the hard line religious community do what they did, I understand the reason, I just don't like how they do it. There should be other peaceful ways to defend Him, if they think God need any defending..
